WHO Report: Climate Change Is ‘Single Biggest Health Threat’ to Humanity
‘The burning of fossil fuels is killing us,’ the new report from the World Health Organization said.
The World Health Organization on Monday sounded the alarm on climate change, warning in a new report that it is "the single biggest health threat facing humanity."
The WHO report outlined 10 recommendations for governments, including reimagining urban environments, transport and mobility and implementing a "just and inclusive" transition to renewable energy.
"The burning of fossil fuels is killing us," the report said. "Climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity. While no one is safe from the health impacts of climate change, they are disproportionately felt by the most vulnerable and disadvantaged."
The report was published ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, which runs Oct. 31-Nov. 12.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on the intimate and delicate links between humans, animals and our environment," WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement. "The same unsustainable choices that are killing our planet are killing people."
Tedros joined groups representing 45 million doctors and health professionals calling on all countries "to update their national climate commitments under the Paris Agreement to commit to their fair share of limiting warming to 1.5 [degrees Celsius]" in an open letter to national leaders.
"Wherever we deliver care, in our hospitals, clinics and communities around the world, we are already responding to the health harms caused by climate change," health professionals wrote in the letter.
In August, the U.N.-appointed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change wrote in a report that global temperatures have jumped 1.1 degrees Celsius since the 19th century to reach their highest level in over 100,000 years.#globalwarming #climatechange#bluesky #blueskye #blueskyefoundation
